The Top 5 League of Legends Songs According to Me, a LoL Novice

Worlds 2020 is in the books! Since its inception in 2011, the League of Legends World Championship has consistently proven why it is the pinnacle of esports, and 2020 was no different. Whether it was the stunning opening ceremony or the endless amount of exciting and memorable plays that the gaming world has become accustomed to with LoL, this year’s Worlds did not disappoint.

My knowledge of the game itself is basically nonexistent, but one thing I do know is that few utilize the power of music to unify and captivate an audience the way League of Legends does. Every year around Worlds time, LoL and the folks at Riot Games turn on the melodic marketing machine and release amazing music to accompany the equally amazing hype. These songs inevitably rack up millions of views, and for good reason. Over the years, League of Legends has released some– *clears throat–* … legendary songs, and with the recent release of K/DA’s official music video for “MORE,” I figure now is as good a time as ever to revisit some of the tunes that have contributed to the game’s legendary lore.

Here is my list of the top five League of Legends songs.

5. RISE (ft. The Glitch Mob, Mako, and The Word Alive) | Worlds 2018

One could make a very solid workout playlist full of League of Legends songs alone. Every last one of them evoke absurdly powerful feelings and emotions of inspiration and desire to conquer any task at hand; “rise” above, if you will. Naturally, that is the case with Worlds 2018 theme, “RISE,” a quintessential tune for the esports landscape’s most prestigious tournament where legends are made and forever enshrined in the history books.

4. Awaken (ft. Valerie Broussard) | League of Legends 2019

There are no LoL songs that better represent the grandeur of the World’s stage than this.

Coming in at number 4 is “Awaken.” Even though this isn’t one of the official Worlds themes per se, this is what the arrival of Worlds season sounds like. This song just screams “wake up, grind, and fulfill your destiny.” Or you know, wake up and win a world championship (congrats to Damwon gaming). In typical League of Legends fashion, “Awaken” is another wildly inspirational song that fits Riot Games’ consistent branding for these epic scores.

Riot Games not only hits home runs with their songs, they also knock it out of the park every.. single.. time with their cinematics. This song combined with the video that perfectly complements it? A masterpiece.

And the violin in this song sounds oh so beautiful.

3. Pentakill – Mortal Reminder | League of Legends 2017

Most great video game soundtracks have a bit of everything to cater to their wide audiences. With a total of over 115 million monthly players, I’d say that League of Legends has a pretty diverse audience, with loyal players from literally all across the globe, all with varying musical interests. “Mortal Reminder” is a lively rock thrill ride with exciting production and exciting orchestration. Overall, it’s just a great listen and is definitely my favorite song of its kind that Riot Games has released.

2. Warriors (ft. 2WEI and Edda Hayes) | League of Legends 2020

This is how I view this song: in the beginning, there was a child of prophecy bred to be a valiant champion of warriors, who eventually rose to his/her potential. It’s a story from beginning to end, musically layered in a way that tells the perfect progression of the ascension to one’s fate. The slow build-up perfectly sets the tone for the chilling choir vocals that are introduced a minute in. From that point on, the song’s progression continues to make its case for flawless, melodic storytelling.

1. True Damage – GIANTS (ft. Becky G, Keke Palmer, SOYEON, DUCKWRTH, Thutmose) | League of Legends 2019

There are plenty of League of Legends songs worthy of the top spot on anybody’s list. GIANTS is my number one for the simple fact that it is the one LoL song most similar to songs I listen to the most on a daily basis: upbeat, fast-paced music with a nice beat. Rule of thumb for music: if it has a dope beat, add it to the playlist—period. It also helps that it has a nice and appealing chorus, which has shamelessly been the main attraction of my not-so-legendary shower world tours. The crazy switch up at the 2:12 mark brings a hype and hip-hop vibe unlike most songs that Riot Games has put out, so it’s also a refreshing sound for a League of Legends production.

And that wraps up my list of the top five League of Legends songs. I may not know much about the game itself, but one thing I do know… they put out some truly amazing music. It doesn’t just sound good, it also evokes emotion equal to the prestige of the game itself. Riot Games are legends for that in my book.

Honorable Mentions

Take Over (ft. Jeremy McKinnon (A Day To Remember), MAX, Henry) | Worlds 2020: “Take Over” is a welcoming addition to the LoL playlist and fits well with the underlying theme of triumph and perseverance that all of the game’s songs portray so well. Shoutout to Damwon Gaming who took over the Worlds stage in Shanghai and weathered the storm to secure the Summoner’s Cup and become world champions. Hearts of lions.

Light & Shadow (Hiroyuki Sawano feat. Gemie) | League of Legends 2019: This song is so pleasing to the ear that I’ve only recently just realized that the vocals are in fact in English instead of Japanese. The tone and feel that the song exudes is so riveting that it didn’t matter that I didn’t understand the lyrics.
