Overall Rating

5/5

1 - Visuals

5/5

The Room’s visuals are beyond compare. The details on every piece of the puzzle, and in fact on every item you see, are so incredibly clear and precise. And, since it’s a puzzle game that relies on you being able to understand and move through the puzzles to finish the game, this incredible detail is especially important.

I wouldn’t call myself a master of puzzle games by any means, but thanks to The Room’s amazing visuals which brought these puzzles to life, I found myself moving through with surprising ease. Solving them by looking at every detail was just so deliciously enticing.

For visuals, this game gets 5 out of 5 stars.

2 - Audio

5/5

The Room’s audio is absolute perfection. There’s background music, but never too much, and the sound effects that go along with everything you do in the game serve to completely immerse you within the gameplay.

The best parts of the audio, however, are the mysterious creaks and “old house sounds” you occasionally hear which make you feel as though you aren’t exactly alone in this mysterious house with an ancient safe in the attic. The audio of this game creates a perfect mystery, with just enough suspense to keep it interesting, but the perfect amount of ambience to allow you to keep moving forward through the thought-inducing puzzles.

For audio, this game gets 5 out of 5 stars.

3 - Story/Progression

5/5

The Room’s story is a perfect balance to the mystery of the puzzles. While the emphasis of the game is the puzzles you’re solving, the story carries you along and leads you into the rest of this game series.

Without the story behind it, this would just be a really excellent puzzle game. With the story, however, it’s a compelling work of art that gives you a reason to keep going other than just the satisfaction of solving the puzzles. It’s perfect for any gamer who also happens to be a fan of mysteries in the vein of Agatha Christie or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

For Story/Progression, this game gets 5 out of 5 stars.

4 - Gameplay

5/5

The Room’s gameplay is refreshingly intuitive. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I’m not the greatest puzzler in the world, but when it came to solving these puzzles, I felt only joy and pride. The mechanics of the game are so easy to master that anyone, even the most novice of puzzle gamers, can fully focus on the puzzles and not have to worry about figuring out a complex set of keyboard moves.

In short, this game is one of the most complexly amazing puzzle games out there, but it’s balanced by simplified controls that make it fun for players of any skill level.

For gameplay, this game gets 5 out of 5 stars.

5 - Context

5/5

The Room fits so perfectly into the context of puzzle and mystery games. It rides the line between exceptional puzzles to solve and mysteries that keep you wanting to move forward. If you’ve ever wanted to play through your favorite mystery novel and play the role of the detective, The Room is the game for you.

In the world of puzzle games, there are plenty of options, but many of them can be cheesy, and some can be too heavily focused on the storyline to really make the puzzles extraordinary. The Room has none of these issues; it really is the quintessential puzzle mystery game.

For context, this game gets 5 out of 5 stars.

Conclusion

I was expecting a good game in The Room before I started playing it purely because of the reviews I had read. What I wasn’t expecting was a puzzle game that would grip me so tightly and make me want to keep going for the satisfaction of solving the puzzles and understanding the mystery. Wow, what a game! I’m excited to play through the rest of the series to fully understand this mysterious story.

Overall, this game gets 5 out of 5 stars.
