Square Enix’s Guardians of the Galaxy Officially Announced at E3

Way back in 2017, the existence of Eidos-Montréal’s Guardians of the Galaxy game was leaked to the internet. It was not until today, in the first moments of Square Enix’s E3 presentation, that the game was officially announced.

Today’s Square Enix Presents opened with an extended trailer and gameplay of the long-awaited Marvel game. Eidos-Montréal’s Guardians is not a sequel or re-telling of either the comic or the films. Rather, the game will tell a new adaptation of the Guardians’ early days in a way best-crafted to fit the gaming medium. (Don’t worry – the studio worked heavily with the crew over at Marvel.)

So, yes, it’s essentially a video game reboot of Guardians of the Galaxy. Which also explains why Rocket has a cool beard and Star-Lord is noticeably un-Chris-Pratt-like.

Guardians only allows you to play as Star-Lord, which may initially disappoint some players. However, the gameplay from E3 quickly illustrated why this centeredness is actually an asset: the game has a very fast-paced decision-making mechanic, which can have deep impacts on gameplay and the relationship between the characters. The other Guardians are making their own decisions around you, and you just have to deal with it.

The battle system also looked slick and engaging. And, of course, there’s the option to jam out to Star-Lord’s mix tape: the gameplay trailer included a rallying chorus of Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation.”

Eidos-Montréal’s Guardians of the Galaxy will be available on October 26th, 2021, for Playstation, XBox, and PC. (Sorry, Switch!)
