Sony Partnering with Discord to Integrate the Service into PSN

Jim Ryan, the president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, announced in a recent blog post that Playstation will be integrating Discord early next year. “Our goal is to bring the Discord and Playstation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year,” he said, “allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.”

Ryan’s brief post didn’t provide any concrete details as to what the partnership between the two companies would actually look like. Odds are the app itself will be made available for use on PlayStation consoles as an alternative chat infrastructure. Discord is the communication service of choice for gamers with more than 140 million monthly active users since December 2020.

The communication service has been on the radar of multiple companies as of this year. In March, it was reported that Microsoft was in talks to acquire Discord in a $10 billion deal, but the company decided to walk away from the offer with the intention of pursuing an initial public offering. Sony’s partnership with Discord allows the service to maintain its valued independence.

Besides integrating Discord into their gaming systems, Sony has also taken an ownership stake in the company as part of their latest investment round. Sony is believed to have contributed a small minority stake in the company, although the exact amount is unknown.

Sony’s move is significant for many reasons: it competes with Microsoft’s Xbox and Windows ecosystem, makes them a minority owner of a company before a potential initial public offering, and creates a partnership with a service widely accepted by the video game community. “Empowering players to create communities and enjoy shared gaming experiences is at the heart of what we do,” Ryan said, “so we are beyond excited to start this journey with one of the world’s most popular communication services.”

Within the coming months, we’ll have to see just how the two companies connect the Discord social experience with the PlayStation gaming experience.
