Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Sequel Gets Official Title and Logo

Talks of a sequel to the box-office smash hit Sonic the Hedgehog began to circulate only a few months after its initial release. Hopes of a second installment were teased at the end of the first movie with a scene where Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik begins to plot his revenge after being casted away to a mushroom planet. Robotnik is revealed to have gone insane and now has the crazy, wiry mustache look from the games. Another scene comes at the tail-end of the movie (pun intended) in which Sonic’s beloved brethren Tails arrives from a ring portal onto Earth with the hopes of finding his blue buddy.

Even though everybody knew a sequel was happening, official word about it didn’t come out until February 10, 2021, when the Twitter page for the Sonic movie provided a mini teaser. The tweet shows the official graphic for the film and ends by giving a release date set for April 8, 2022.

While the real-world events of the film diverged from the occurrences of the games, the sequel is potentially taking elements from the original Sega Genesis series. Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 platform game from 1992 introduced the character of Tails as well as Dr. Robotnik’s plan to gather all of the chaos emeralds. With rumors of Knuckles appearing in the next movie, portions of the 1994 game Sonic the Hedgehog 3 might also be touched upon.

The cast from Paramount’s first Sonic film installment will be returning for the sequel including Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, and Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski. Colleen O’Shaughnessey has been the voice for Tails in the video games since 2014 and also provided the voice for the two-tailed fox in the post-credit scene. It is likely that she will return to voice Tails in the next movie unless the film studio desires someone with more movie star power. Hopefully that isn’t the case so that soon we will have a line-up of live-action Sonic characters with voices proper to their identities.

There’s really no telling as to what direction Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will go. All that really matters is that whatever adventure we go on will be with our beloved group of cartoon hedgehogs, foxes, and echidnas.
