Riot Games Announces 2021 League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational in Iceland

League of Legends is heading to Reykjavík, Iceland for the 2021 MSI Tournament. The annual tournament returns after being canceled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. It will be held May 6-22 in the Laugardalshöll – a famous sporting arena in Iceland known for the “Match of the Century” World Chess Championship. Due to the ongoing pandemic, there will be no live audience.

With this change also comes some new changes to the format. Riot announced a new three stage format: The Group Stage, the Rumble Stage and the Knockout Stage.

Group Stage – 12 teams will be put into four three-team groups playing a best-of-one double round robin. The top two teams will advance to the rumble stage.

Rumble Stage – The top six teams will compete in another best-of-one round robin where the top four teams will advance to the knockout stage.

Knockout Stage – Similar to previous MSIs of the past, the top four teams will play in best-of five bracket style with the semifinals determining who makes it to the MSI Finals.

The 12 regions participating in MSI 2021 will be the LPL (China), LCK (Korea), LEC (Europe), LCS (North America), PCS (Southeast Asia), Vietnam, CBLOL (Brazil), LLA (Latin America), TCL (Turkey), LJL (Japan), LCL (Commonwealth of Independent States) and the LCO (Oceania).

In addition, Riot also announced that Verizon will be the official 5G provider of the event following massive success with the Valorant First Strike tournament and ahead of other events such as the Wild Rift Invitational.

The return of MSI is looking to be more exciting. With competition from around the world looking to be fiercer than ever. We cannot wait to bring coverage from the event for readers across the globe when MSI comes to Iceland this spring.
