Why You Should Promote Your Music Through Gaming Montages

Why You Should Promote Your Music Through Gaming Montages

In the last century, the evolution of the gaming industry has been nothing short of revolutionary. From arcade games to cutting-edge gaming consoles, a lot has changed. The first-ever recorded video game revolved around just tennis and was created in the late 1950s by a physicist at a science fair. Decades later, not only has gaming completely transformed the way we perceive popular culture, but it has also become one of the most profitable entertainment industries in the world.

Of course, gaming has increased in popularity over time, but video games drive popular culture entirely today. From the 2001 blockbuster Lara Croft to the action-adventure world of Uncharted and the life-like brilliance of The Last Of Us, video games are now able to compete with storytelling as seen in films. The intersection of filmmaking and video-game culture has given birth to gaming montages, fast-paced and well-edited videos, which blur the line between films and gaming. Gaming montages have become the next big thing and have established themselves as a staple of the online video community and gaming scene today.

The pandemic has caused more people to stay indoors which has recorded a surge in the entry of new game players and the re-engagement of already existing ones. The global games market revenues are projected to reach $189.3 billion in 2021 with 2.8 billion gamers, up from 2.7 billion gamers in 2020. The number of gamers is increasing every single day and is expected to exceed 3 billion by 2023.

What’s A Gaming Montage?

YouTube gaming stars such as PewDiePie, JuegaGerman, FaZe Clan, Tyler “Ninja” Blevins among others make use of gaming montages to show off their skills as professional gamers.  Gaming montages are often used to show off a gamer’s best skills, hype up an incoming competition, make hilarious, parody montages, gameplays, and “walkthroughs”.

They give budding gamers and gaming influencers an opportunity to flaunt their impressive gameplay and editing skills. Montages are usually multiple clips of different kinds of gameplay put together with a feature song, played in the background. Depending on the platform they’re published to, the tracks change from full-length songs to clips with the most energetic beats. They keep viewers hooked to the video, allowing them to focus their attention on the game, as well as the upbeat track correlating with each gameplay.

Just like you don’t have to play soccer to enjoy watching it, you don’t have to be a gamer to enjoy watching gaming montages. With 40 million active gaming channels on YouTube and over 100 billion hours of gaming content watched, the platform has become a major destination for the industry. Today, watching someone play Fortnite can be just as exhilarating as actually playing the game.

Whether a gaming montage is created to collaborate with musicians or just to engage with followers, the time, effort, and detail put into them can create truly amazing results. For example: Faze Flea’s two-minute-long Fortnite Uniquemontage video took him 50 hours to make and earned him $2,380 in revenue. This number continues to rise significantly as gamers implore different methods to engage with subscribers.

Gaming Montages

Another example is of world-famous gaming influencer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, who earned almost $10 million in 2018 by streaming himself playing “Fortnite” on Twitch and posting videos on YouTube. He continues to make half a million dollars every month by playing Fortnite in his bedroom. Although his talent makes him successful within the gaming montage industry, it is Ninja’s innate ability to connect the right music with his gameplay, which makes the montage more thrilling to experience!

The Power Of Music In Gaming Montages

Music is the key factor that drives the experience of watching a gaming montage. Music activation in such gaming montages enhances the viewer’s sense of immersion, acts as emotional cues for plot changes, cultivates the theme of a video game, and makes the experience simply thrilling. Think of this: there’s a reason why A-list artists have been looking into the gaming industry for integrations. Last year, Travis Scott and his in-game stunt with Fortnite led to his song with Kid Cudi “The Scotts” racking up 7.45 million plays in its first 24 hours on Spotify. It became the world’s number one hit at the time.

Then again, professional gaming influencers create various types of content depending on what works best with their followers. In a walkthrough video, the gamer attempts to help improve their subscriber’s skills within a particular video game. So, adding a voiceover would be their best bet, as it guides their fellow gamers towards completing a video game or specific elements within the game’s universe.

Other players work hard at creating gaming montages, to familiarize subscribers with their impressive gameplay skills. Most top players add music to their videos, particularly dubstep or EDM tracks as they’re very versatile when it comes to editing. Your video can be slow or chaotic or both – depending on how you edit to the music. FaZe Clan, the YouTube crew who became famous for their “Trickshot Videos” has especially popularized the use of “beats” music in their montage videos. Montage videos can do wonders for a brand’s online image, and they can do the very same for artists and record labels.

Gamers who want to build their audience know they need to stand out, and adding music is a classic way to grab a viewer’s attention. It distinguishes them from the billions of videos on the platform, and music has the power to express the game/gamer’s personality through it. In many ways, music selection could be the only way viewers are able to truly experience a gamer’s channel. It also drives more eyeballs to videos, makes them more exciting to watch and increases the concentration of the person viewing!

The Collaboration Between Musicians And Gamers

The decline of streaming music and the rise of gaming as an industry has brought about an unlikely friendship between musicians and gamers. Musicians need to get their music heard, and gamers need their videos to be viewed. There’s an easy way for both to monetize their influence at the same time! When Musicians and Gamers collaborate, they can both achieve bigger milestones, with Gamers reaching out to a massive Internet audience, and Musicians having the opportunity to make their music go viral.

Artists have been collaborating with gaming influencers, gaming companies and engaging in digital music promotion for a while now. Montage videos are able to gain millions of YouTube views, thanks to a steady collaboration between an artist and a gamer. These fast-paced videos have the potential to drive traffic to musicians trying to find potential listeners online.

Gaming Montages

Here are some examples of successful collaboration between musicians and gaming influencers:

  1. 16-year-old professional gamer Cody Conrod aka Clix’s Fortnite gaming montage titled Never Change, featuring the titular song from artist Dustystaytrue has received over 5.8 million views and counting since being uploaded on September 2, 2020.
  2. FaZe Sway’s Gang Gang montage video has over 4.5 million views and features an incredible track from artist Badda TD. The song is discovered by millions of potential listeners and fans who are inspired by Sway’s gaming skills. It is a win-win collaboration for both!
  3. In February 2019, 10.7 million people attended Marshmello’s in-game concert, inside Fortnite. The recap of the 10-minute music set has over 65 million viewers on YouTube, and Marshmellow made history by bringing together 10.7 million people together to watch his performance live. The event boosted the DJ’s streams by more than 20,000%. They made history!

These numbers make it clear that the gaming industry offers an irreplaceable platform for musicians to promote their music. They can help artists grow their fanbase, reach out to future fans all while keeping their engagement at an all-time high. Gaming montages have become indispensable to artists and vice versa. With their mind-boggling graphics and every gamer’s unique skills, these montages attract gaming fans from all over the world, but it is the music that transforms the viewing experience.
