Perkz Talks MSS Playoffs, AD Carries in the Mid-Lane, and Who He Wants to Face at MSI

Cloud9 has been the team to beat this season. With a 13-5 regular season record and two convincing playoff victories against 100 Thieves and Team Liquid, Cloud9 is a heavy favorite to retake the title and represent North America at the Mid Season Invitational. While each member has had their turn in the spotlight, all eyes are locked on Luca “Perkz” Perković, the European superstar who asserted his dominance in the midlane and earned himself the first All Pro Mid Laner for the LCS Spring Season. Following his team’s victory against Team Liquid, we caught up with Perkz to talk about the win.

In February of 2020, G2 Esports put out one of the most quoted League of Legends tweets of all time:

The famous, poetic tweet plagues Perkz whenever Ryze or Azir is picked. But this weekend, Ryze was chosen, and Perkz showed dominance to the point of picking up a quad. When asked about the playoff Perkz meme, he explained that he always shows up when needed.

“During regular seasons, I think there can be times where I don’t have a perfect play, which is just normal,” he said. “But then in playoffs, I usually play very well. Most of the games. Like every game.”

Perkz showed how impactful he can be in Games 3 and 4 by dominating on the Ryze and Lucian while being impactful to his team. His playoff game versus 100 Thieves also showed his prowess on champions such as Yone and Tristana. In the Mid Season Showdown alone, he currently spouts a 72.2% kill participation and often shows up as the big playmaker.

The Banter Between TL and C9

Over the weeks leading up to the match at the top, Team Liquid’s Mid Laner Nicolaj “Jensen” Jensen threw some banter at Perkz for being better at AD Carry than Mid Lane. When asked about his teammate’s jabs, he laughed, saying “I like playing AD Carries in the mid-lane. That’s what I like the most.”

Perkz has been able to adapt to the mid-lane control mage meta as well as play flex picks such as Tristana and Lucian. On Tristana, he has a 100% win rate, with 3 games played and an over 70% kill participation rate. While he’s juggled between AD Carry with G2 Esports the last few years, his flexibility is an even bigger tool for Cloud9.

Preparing for the Big Stages

Perkz is no stranger to vocalizing his concerns about League of Legends. In a recent interview with Travis Gafford, he expressed concerns that North America is having playoffs on Patch 11.5 while the rest of the world plays on 11.6. When asked about it a week later, he explained that he enjoyed how the LEC and other regions had practice on 11.6, but noted that MSI will be on 11.8, saying they’ll have to get a jump on it as soon as they’re able.

He also said he’s keeping his eyes on who he wants to face at MSI, calling out players like Zhuo “knight” Ding of Top Esports and Song “Rookie” Eui-jin. Because neither of them will be at MSI since they’re both eliminated, Perkz views the LPL and LCK as his top competition (especially Heo “Showmaker” Su from DWG Kia), as well as his former team, G2 Esports.

Cloud9 will be representing North America at the 2021 Mid Season Invitational in Reykjavik. We look forward to speaking to him again soon!
