Netflix shutting down on Nintendo 3DS and Wii U

Nintendo announced that it is removing Netflix for the 3DS and the Wii U. It has already been removed from the eShop for both devices. Here is the statement that Netflix put out.

“Starting Dec 31st, 2020, the Netflix app will no longer be available for new users to download from Nintendo eShop on the Wii U console or Nintendo 3DS family of systems. During that time, it will be possible for existing users to re-download these applications. Service for existing users will continue until June 30th, 2021. Thank you to everyone who enjoyed Netflix on these platforms over the years.”

With this free software, Netflix touted that “You could instantly watch TV shows and movies streaming from Netflix.

  • For Netflix members, it’s part of your unlimited streaming membership.
  • Not a Netflix member? You can start a FREE trial today.
  • Watch as often as you want. Whenever you want.
  • Subscription required. Subject to availability in your region.”

So it seems that if you already have Netflix on these devices you will still be able to redownload it, but for people who do not have it on these devices, you will no longer be able to get it or use it. Even people who have Netflix on these devices will only be able to use it until June 30th 2021 before it is gone.

Well, this is quite unfortunate. First Netflix took off The Office, and now this. Is this the start of the end for Netflix? I mean, probably not, but you have to admit there have been some major changes in the last couple weeks. At the very least, it’s the end of Netflix’s tenuous partnership with Nintendo.
