Licorice Talks Strength of Top Lane, Adjusting to a New Team and Licorice Vines

FlyQuest has had quite the story the past few splits. From making their first finals appearances to qualifying for Worlds and even taking down Top Esports in the Group stage, the organization has hit the ground running both domestically and internationally. This season, the roster brought on a team with a wealth of experience and talent, including veteran top laner Eric “Licorice” Ritchie. Following their loss to 100 Thieves, Syft sat down with Licorice to talk about his thoughts on the game and his new team.

Licorice is a player known for his ability to draw pressure, play on an island and show up when necessary. In this game, he put himself on the Gangplank and was able to attract pressure versus 100T and Ssumday’s Renekton.

“Usually Gangplank is a pretty counterable champion in lane,” said Licorice. “But I think right now you can kind of just win almost every game.”

Licorice also explained that top lane is in a relatively stable position with picks such as Camille, Renekton and Gragas being high priority. However, he also explained that the game is in a heavy jungle meta and, once jungle is nerfed, top will be much better.

Licorice’s Role on FlyQuest and the Team

The announcement of the FlyQuest roster came with a lot of excitement for the team. Players like Licorice and jungler Brandon “Josedeodo” Joel Villegas brought a lot of excitement while rookies like David “Diamond” Bérubé and Christian “Palafox” Palafox are getting a chance to shine on the big stage.

Licorice said that his goal on the team is to be more vocal and an in-game and out-of-game leader. To him, it is an exciting opportunity and one he felt he never had on his former teams.

“Setting your team up for success and having good practice methods and everything is basically like the keys to doing well in the long term,” he said.

Licorice also outlined his goals for the year with a new organization and team. For him, however, it’s not about thinking of long term aspirations. “Obviously, I want to win, and everyone on my team wants to win,” said Licorice. “But at the same time, it’s like really about just having a good practice every day.”

He also gave a shout out to the bees – in reference to the ongoing social media campaign raising money for The Bee Conservancy.

Does Licorice Actually Like Licorice?

We did ask Licorice about the origin of his name and whether or not the controversial candy is one of his favorites.

“When I was a kid, I had a lot of licorice. But I can’t say that I eat too much these days,” he said. “I just think it’s a cool word. You know.”

Any Final Thoughts?

We asked Licorice for his final thoughts for fans of FlyQuest.

“We’re still a new team and we’re figuring everything out. And we’re always doing our best,” he said. “So make sure to keep cheering us on if you are and we really appreciate it.”

We can’t wait to see what Licorice brings to the table in the future.
