Ubisoft recently dropped two new trailers containing gameplay for the much anticipated Far Cry 6 with an official release date of October 7 2021. Marketing for Ubisoft’s upcoming franchise title has heavily featured Giancarlo Esposito’s character “El Presidente” Anton Castillo, the dictator of the fictional island nation of Yara. Today’s gameplay showcase revealed how “El Presidente” fits into Far Cry 6 and the backstory of the island of Yara.
Ubisoft’s worldwide gameplay reveal for Far Cry 6 began with a half hour slideshow, which provided historical and environmental context for Yara. Also displayed in the slideshow segment are propaganda images of Castillo’s rise to power and how his son Diego is following in his footsteps. It becomes obvious that the game will focus on fighting against Castillo’s control of the people by way of revolution.
After the history lesson ends, the first trailer provided a number of cutscenes spliced with gameplay footage that provided exposition for the game’s plot. The group of characters fighting against Castillo’s reign are called the “Libertads,” led by a fearless mercenary named Clara Garcia and a master mechanic named Juan Cortez. The protagonist of the game is a young military drop-out named Dani Rojas, who joins the Libertads to fight for Yara’s freedom.
Narrative lead Navid Khavari appeared in the second trailer to help walk through extra gameplay footage with a deep dive into the game. The highlight of the gameplay exposition was the reveal of “guerilla teacher” Juan Cortez’s arsenal of inventions including missile-firing backpacks, miniguns crafted from motorcycle engines, and a CD-launcher that blasts the Macarena.
This series of bootleg weapons at your disposal combined with Dani’s expert knowledge of guerilla warfare will create some trouble for Castillo’s regime. Far Cry 6 is set to release on October 7 2021 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Stadia, Amazon Luna, and Windows on the Epic Games Store and the Ubisoft Store.
