E.S.G Art Series: dryft, Thumbnail Designer

Art- the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

The world of gaming and esports is undoubtedly one of the most influential cultural phenomena in the world today. Its reach spans to every corner of the globe and has inspired millions in the form of every medium of content and pop culture, including art. E.S.G. honors this creative expression as we feature a community of talented artists, illustrators, designers, and creatives who have used their vast imaginations to create stunning esports and gaming related art.

In this edition, we look at the work of 14-year-old Israeli thumbnail designer dryft.

My fingers are heavily inspired from anime. I’m always fascinated by the way they draw them and the skill required to do finger anatomy is out of this world. So I’ve been practicing finger positioning for a while and although I have a lot to improve on I think this is a big difference from a few months ago.

One of a long line of quality Fortnite thumbnails in dryft’s portfolio. Twitter fingers ain’t got nothing on anime fingers. 😆

The concept of creating and conceptualizing a thumbnail is an art in and of itself; there’s an element of strategy and creativity to it considering the fact that viewers lay their eyes on the thumbnail well before they ever even click on a particular video. The thumbnail is a valuable marketing tool, and the young Israeli designer is a beast at creating them.

Also, she takes inspiration from anime and implements it into his work—that alone tells me she has great taste and will do well in life. 😆

Again, I have some criticism about this one, but I mainly like it because of the concept and the lighting. It took me quite a while to make, but I like how it turned out!

Dryft has lit both the design and gaming communities on fire with her clean designs. She’s already proficient at conceptualizing designs, as evidenced by this piece. Her youthful, developing mind will only get sharper so we can naturally expect more sick designs for years to come.

I don’t have a specific reason why I like this, but this is practically the visual example of my passion for art. There’s so much to improve on and when you do more complicated stuff there will be a lot of details you’ll have to watch out for, and it just keeps you busy all day.

A thumbnail so heavenly yet devilishly intriguing—a demonic deity of sorts. The juxtaposition of two contrasting elements into an effective design is a job well done here and speaks to dryft’s ingenuity as a designer.

I’m passionate about art because there’s always something to do, always a new category to explore. Whether it be NFTs, different concepts for thumbnails, wallpapers, even video editing, I want to try out new things and keep improving in the creative industry, opening my mind to new things or returning to old ones. It just always keeps me entertained.

The thumbnail’s posing is heavily inspired from Demon Slayer, one of my favorite animes to date, including the movie. I went with a more clean and aesthetic style for this one, something that’ll be satisfying to look at. Sadly, they {Overtime Gaming} chose a different concept of the thumbnail but I still prefer this one more. And I think I did good on it!

Inspired by the hit anime Demon Slayer, this design takes on the indomitable will of its creator as an extremely refined and crisp display of creativity. The blades are a literal and figurative shining mark of mastery and artistry within this dynamic design.

Demon Slayer is highly regarded for its stunning visuals and technique-centric attacks. Dryft’s art and technique parallel the anime’s, as both are exceptional in their execution and appeal. Courtesy of Viz Media.

This is probably my favorite thumbnail. I had to mix Crystal’s hair and necklace (so she’d be recognizable) as the ghost.  It’s extremely hard to mix a clickbait thumbnail with something a bit more dark and spooky for it to fit with the client’s previous thumbnails, but I think I’ve done a good job. Also, this scene and its entire vibe are heavily inspired by Outlast 2.

Horror films are popular for their ability to instill a sense of thrill, adrenaline, and even excitement. This thumbnail is one created by an individual who “understood the assignment.” Not unlike the attraction of these films for their uncanny appeal, this design is one that’s rich with astonishing intrigue and spooky amounts of creativity.

In short: you see, you click. A+ work!

About the Artist

There are many designers out there who create Fortnite thumbnails, but few have seen the level of success as young as Israel’s own Alona, a.k.a. dryft. At 14 years old, she’s already a highly sought-after designer who’s worked with quite a few big names in the Fortnite community, including FaZe Sway, DuckyTheGamer, Formula, Tiko, Ghoulz, GrantTheGoat, and many others.

Dryft’s design journey started in Jan 2020— just over a year ago— but she’s already made tremendous strides as an exceptional designer. With just over a year’s worth of experience and the power of youth on her side, the sky’s the limit for the young designer!
