Art- the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.
Currently, in a “galaxy” not too far away, dwells an artist by the name of astrodart—a star, a sentinel, a champion in the bowels of League of Legends artistry. She loves Riot Game’s/League’s virtual hip-hop band True Damage and they love her too. Whether you love, hate, appreciate, or can’t relate to the LoL craze, one can certainly appreciate true talent. #ArtofLegends
The world of gaming and esports is undoubtedly one of the most influential cultural phenomena in the world today. Its reach spans to every corner of the globe and has inspired millions in the form of every medium of content and pop culture, including art. E.S.G. honors this creative expression as we feature a community of talented artists, illustrators, and creatives who have used their vast imaginations to create stunning esports and gaming-related art.
In this edition, we look at the work of the sensational illustrator astrodart.
This piece was done for a community zine back in 2018 and it’s still a piece I think about from time to time. I was at the time super proud with how I managed to make a piece with a limited color palette, something I usually don’t do, so it’s something I’m still really proud of making.astrodart
League of Legends character Lucian is a polarizing enigma with a relentless lust for vengeance.
With aliases like ‘The Purifier’ and ‘Sentinel of Light,’ his spirit is one of rage and ruthless aggression towards evil and those who have wronged him. This illustration from astro flawlessly captures the essence of the character and is an otherworldly display of artistic talent.
I’m a HUGE sucker for League of Legends’s skinlines and this was a piece I remember vividly having so much fun doing because it was part of their girly, anime inspired skinline. It was also a very stylized art style from what I would usually do but I would end up bringing this style in other pieces.astrodart
The world of League of Legends is a wide and vast galaxy of possibilities. From champions to pro-players, fans of this beloved game all have things they are proud of. The cosmetic skin department is one aspect that fans gravitate to as many of them enhance the game and give an overall more enjoyable playing experience.
This tribute to Star Guardian Zoe is a creative take on the expression of cosmic madness that the character represents. The Star Guardians are destined to burn bright, but tragically collapse as furiously as they shine—meanwhile this illustration will live forever in creation as a shining star in the realm of art itself.
Another skinline piece, but this one was based off theSpirit Blossom animated cinematic for the release of the character Yone. I immediately zoomed to Photoshop to draw this because I was super inspired by the animation and just had to get something down. I actually finished this piece the same day that teaser dropped.astrodart
LoL is known for its captivating visuals and cinematics, and last year’s Spirit Blossom animated trailer was no exception. Its stunning aesthetics were exceptional even for LoL’s standards, and it inspired this one-of-a-kind piece that eloquently portrays the same sense of poetry and craftsmanship.
As a little kid I just liked the idea of bringing the ideas in my head to life from anything to character design, some funny comic idea, or even of something absolutely cool and epic.astrodart
Teamfight Tactics is another game by Riot and this was inspired by playing the game. At the time of making this, there was a particular game team composition that was overpowered, and I loved abusing it and just wanted to draw a fun piece for it.astrodart
The little legend Shisa is small in stature yet fierce on the battlefield as a spirit in Riot Game’s Teamfight Tactics. As a devoted ally of the Star Guardians, this lion/sheep/mouse hybrid is quite the diminutive dynamo. Here is an illustration of the spirit’s Corrupted variant, which is a depiction of the spirit as Star Guardian Zoe’s familiar.
The inspiration for this piece was from the League of Legends game mode. So my thought behind this piece was, “Hey what if there was a game mode where we can play champions again before they were reworked?” Each of the game modes had these cute little Ziggs illustrations so I tried to add that same aesthetic to it.astrodart
League of Legends’ decorated roster of champions has seen many reworks over the years in which visual and gameplay aspects were altered. This stellar piece illustrates an idea for a game mode in which fans can play with champions again before they were reworked. Entering battle with the original makeup of League’s prestigious champions would certainly make for a refreshing yet familiarly welcome experience.
And of course, some dope artwork from an artist whose namesake inspires such astronomically legendary work wouldn’t hurt either.
About the Artist
Throughout the vast cosmos of creatives, there exists a certain 23-year-old artist from the Shadow Isles—or rather, Arkansas (same thing). Her talent shines as bright as the stars in the luminous night sky and her name is Di (pronounced “Dee”), known creatively as astrodart. The Salvadoran-American artist/illustrator is mostly self-taught and has been creating art since middle school. With a love for League of Legends that knows no bounds, astodart has championed a vast collection of spectacular artwork largely based around the game. She is also the galaxy’s #1 True Damage Fan.
