Dota 2 has finally received a long awaited update, making life easier for fans who wish to watch matches from within the client, in addition to updating the forever ignored Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) app. The app is now operable without players subscribing to Dota’s premium subscription service, Dota Plus, among other changes. Valve announced the updates on their blog and official Twitter.

The blog post mentions the inclusion of a ton of QoL and other changes, which Valve had been ignoring for a solid two years. The Dota 2 client now has the capabilities to let players follow their favorite teams and track all their matches and performances. The ‘Watch’ tab now features a detailed list of all live and past matches, with the ability to download and watch replays. The tab also shows the current standings of all teams in their respective regions, according to Divisions.

A new sub-tab has also been created in the parent Watch tab, complete with a list by date of all the schedules for upcoming and past matches. Additionally, the eponymous ‘Standings’ sub-tab contains neat lists of each region’s standings per division. Dota community star Wykrhm posted a handy reference image on Twitter to familiarize everyone with the changes.

An unmentioned change was made to the UI homescreen. Hoodwink’s release splash-screen has been replaced with the details of the last played match and the model of the hero the player last played as – in my case, this turned out to be Hoodwink. Quite the bamboozle for me.

With the DPC 2021 promising two full months of continuous competitive Dota, Valve will be bringing back features from the olden days. Teams will be submitting in-game effects, sprays, emotes, loading screens, and chat-wheel lines, which players can purchase and equip to use in-game. Needless to say, all such purchases can be made to directly support the teams players like (unless Valve has changed their cosmetics and in-game items policies.)

In the past, Valve has been quiet when it came to updating the community. Now that the company has been actively involving itself with the community, things are looking up for a game often deemed dead.
