One of the biggest names in gaming history is now fully unleashed on mobile. The launch and early success of the new mobile game Crash Bandicoot: On the Run! is another stern reminder of how the name Bandicoot has captured the world’s attention for the past 25 years.
Crash Bandicoot: On the Run is the latest title featuring the former PlayStation mascot, and it’s already a big hit across both iOS and Android.
The mobile game, which launched Thursday, managed more than 8.1 million downloads in its first day since it hit both respective app stores. The actual total number of downloads is even higher, with the game attracting over 11.4 million players since it launched in limited regions for pre-release testing a few weeks ago.
Crash Bandicoot: On the Run is an auto-runner in the style of Temple Run where you must use swipes to the left and right to guide Crash and Coco down three lanes in a level. It still features various series staples and mechanics including life-saving Aku Aku buffs while also introducing new mechanics such as explosive berries that can be lobbed at bosses and bouncy mushrooms that can get you to high platforms.
Crash has established himself as a prominent figure in gaming lore since he burst onto the scene in 1996 in the original Crash Bandicoot for the PlayStation One. Crash’s first game redefined the platforming genre for the 3D realm, a legacy that was enhanced with last year’s highly favored Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, a fine balance between nostalgia and modern platforming.
Crash Bandicoot: On the Run is developed by King, a company specialized in video games for mobile devices, and a subsidiary of Activision. It is now available for free on iOS and Android.
