Ubisoft and Viz Media recently announced their new Assassin’s Creed manga titled Assassin’s Creed: Blade of Shao Jun which is set to release stateside on February 16, 2021. The new material comes from the creative mind of artist Minoji Kurata and will carry on the story of Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China.

Blade of Shao Jun, set in the year 1526, tells the story of elite assassin and last of the Chinese Brotherhood, Shao Jun. The manga takes place during the Great Ming Dynasty in a period of chaotic political purge at the hands of the highly volatile and sadistic Emperor Jiajang. Upon learning her homeland’s faction has been murdered, Shao Jun flees Europe — where another legendary assassin who rhymes with Shmezio Shmauditore (see the meeting in the 2011 animated short Assassin’s Creed: Embers) — makes ir her mission to exact revenge upon the new Emperor. If there is anything we can be sure about it’s that assassins will go to the ends of the Earth to right the wrongs of tyranny — no matter the cost.

Of course, what would an Assassin’s Creed story be without the totally stable (sarcasm alert) and mind-bending machine, the Animus?

Shao Jun’s present-day lineage and resident research subject Lisa Huang is tasked with familiarizing herself with the machine she comes to know as the Animus. Unbeknownst to Lisa Huang, the nefarious Dr. Kigami is using her travels through simulation to uncover the location of a peculiar box lost to time. With pursuits motivated by untold treasures, we’ll get to find out

how far Dr. Kigami will push Lisa Huang to find the box that could change history forever.

After having been originally published overseas in June of 2020, the eight-month wait is nearly over. The iconic Shao Jun will only further solidify her status as one of the greatest assassins of all-time — and we get to follow it through the world of manga.
